Where to watch the Fargo TV series in Australia

While the successful TV series Fargo shares a name with the film that came before it, and is mostly set around the same corner of America's Midwest, each season tells a completely seperate story from the Coen Brothers' original work. 

As an anthology series, every season introduces a new cast of characters, usually in a different era and location, with occasional recurring characters, families and gangs. In the spirit of the original film, most seasons find a rural police offiicer in over their head when they chance upon unspeakable crimes, corruption and conspiracy. 

So you're fixin' to stream that there Fargo series, eh? Well, it's not so simple dontcha know. 

Here in Australia, SBS airs the latest episodes and seasons of Fargo. And you can typically catch up on the current season via SBS On Demand. But if you want to stream the back catalogue, it's slightly more complicated.

Fer example, Stan and MGM (via Amazon Prime Video Channels) have the every season except the latest. That's seasons 1 to 4 at the time of writing, so they don't have season 5 yet. However, if you don't subscribe to SBS On Demand, or you just don't want to cop the ads, you can also purchase all five seasons of Fargo via select digital movie and TV stores, like Apple TV. 

All episodes of Fargo, seasons 1 to 5, are available to stream now on SBS On Demand (Season 5) or Stan and MGM (Seasons 1 to 4). 

Since Season 5 wrapped in early 2024, there hasn't been any concrete news about a sixth season of Fargo. The series creator Noah Hawley expressed a desire for season five to be the last, but has since stated that, once he is finished with FX's Alien TV series, there's a real possibility to keep the Fargo series alive. 

The Fargo series is inspired by the Coen Brothers' 1996 film of the same name. While there's some overlap in themes, locations and personalities, the FX tv show stands on its own two feet from the very first season.

Each season follows a whole new story, but almost every single one shares one, simple story beat: a small-town cop finds themselves in over their head when the sprawling crime families of America's Midwest get involved. That and they all feature killer ensemble casts.

Fargo Season 5 stars Juno Temple (Ted Lasso,) Jon Hamm (Mad Men,) Joe Keery (Stranger Things,) Jennifer Jason Leigh (Single White Female,) and Lamorne Morris (New Girl.) It follows Dorothy "Doy" Lyon, a seeming regular Minnesotan Mum whose complicated past gets dredged up when she attracts the attention of the law at a parents and teachers night that goes horribly wrong.

With so many premium streaming services out there that charge a monthly subscription to access, it’s great to find quality amid the free-to-air streaming companions. Every major channel in Australia has a streaming service nowadays—Ten Play, 9Now, 7plus, ABC iView and SBS On Demand—and while all are ad-supported services, it really breaks down to not just how many hours of content they offer, but how many of those hours are quality. Cue the entry of SBS On Demand, which has bragging rights to a great mix of quality and quantity. While it’s not on the same level as Netflix, Stan or Prime Video, there’s still plenty to watch that helps to make up for some of SBS On Demand’s detractors. Those cons start with lengthy ad breaks and a 720p max resolution, but if you want a great selection of movies, some solid TV options and a smattering of sports, SBS On Demand is absolutely worth installing.
